Created around 1950, the carved figure of Bai Bureh has a beard and stands holding his right hand over his stomach. The carving memorizes the historical Temne leader who organized and led the 1898 revolt known as the Hut Tax War. The figure stands on a small plinth and is in good condition.
GEOGRAPHY / CULTURE GROUP: Sierra Leone, Temne. The Temne are traders as ell as traditional farmers growing rice, cassava, millet, and kola nuts. Most Temne practice Islam. They reside primarily in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. They take tremendous pride in their cultural practices. Bai Bureh was a cultural icon, a great Temne warrior who lived between 1840 and 1908.
