Old Man with Stick

Description: The serpentine stone carving depicts an elderly bald man with beard and a walking stick in his right hand. The man is wearing dress attire, the face has bags below the eyes, the skin is wrinkled from age and the knees are slightly bent. The carving appears to be a person of wisdom. Elderly individuals are highly respected among the Shona of Zimbabwe. The carving is in excellent condition.

The Shona

GEOGRAPHY / CULTURE GROUP: Zimbabwe, Shona. The Shona people of southeast Zimbabwe are noted for their agriculture, pottery, ironwork, wood carving, and music. Traditional Shona once worshipped the all-powerful god and creator Mwari. Western education, urbanization, coupled with the influx of Christian and Muslim traditions have greatly weakened traditional Shona institutions.
