A Temne female figure is carved with four-lobe elaborate coiffure, bare breast, five neck rings, wide shoulders, bulging stomach and buttocks. The statue has hands at side holding the apparent pregnant belly and sits on a plinth. The fine brown patina shows indications of handling. The figurine is in excellent condition.
GEOGRAPHY / CULTURE GROUP: Sierra Leone, Temne. The Temne people are found primarily in the northwestern and central regions of Sierra Leone. The Temne originated in the Fouta Jallon area of Guinea and migrated south between the 13th and 15th centuries to their current location. The Temne are traditional farmers growing rice, cassava, millet, and cola nuts. The society is arranged in chiefdoms of different lineages. The Temne practice many similar traditions as their neighboring tribal groups.
