Characterized by large size, the mask is purposely grotesque with oversize ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. The features are the exact opposite of the Mende Sowei ideals of beauty. The mouth is open and tinted with dried Kola nuts, a lock and spring appear on the ears. The mask is roughly carved and allowed to become dusty and dirty to match the ragged and outlandish costume worn by the masquerader. The mask is intended to be outrageous, ugly and funny. Mask shows sign of use and is in excellent condition.
