Nimba Headdress
- African Art Collection
- The Nimba, carved by expert carvers represents the mother of fertility, protector of pregnant women, and presides over all agricultural ceremonies. The Nimba’s face and chest are decorated with detailed scarification that resembles the agricultural fields were crops are grown. The Nimba’s hair is braided with a spike down the center of the head, the nose is extended, and eyes are bulging. The mask is damaged. There is a split on the left side which appears to have been repaired using local materials. In addition, part of the right front leg is missing. The mask is old, shows signs of use and is in fair to good condition.
