GEOGRAPHY / CULTURE GROUP: Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso, a small landlocked country (formerly Upper Volta) is known for its indigenous masks and dancing. The culture of Burkina Faso is called the Burkinabe culture. In addition to rich traditional artistic heritage, there is a large artistic community in Burkina Faso, especially in Ouagadougou, the capital city. Burkina Faso hosts the largest craft market in Africa. Most of the ancient artistic traditions for which Africa is so well known have been preserved in Burkina Faso because so many people continue to honor the spirits using masks and carved figures.
