This square type of tool resembling piano wires is an ancient instrument used for weaving native cotton strips of cloth. The wood on the two ends, as well as the wire are aged and show signs of use. The beater is used but remains in good condition.

Sierra Leone is comprised of three provinces and the Western Area. Men and women in the three provinces practice strip weaving. The local craftsmen take tremendous pride in their craft.
