He graduated with a bachelor's degree in art from Eastern Michigan University, a master's degree in printmaking from Wayne State University, and a doctoral degree in education from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Laing served as head of the art departments at Ball State University and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
He came to East Carolina University to serve as dean of the School of Art in 1979, and later as a professor of art.
