- These ducks live near ponds and swamps. Mother wood ducks lay their eggs high up in trees, to protect them from being eaten. When the ducklings hatch, they jump out of the trees to start life with mom on the pond. Boy wood ducks, like this one, have all sorts of colors on their feathers.
