East Carolina's ethic of service was at the heart and soul of its founding over a century ago.

Evident in its original mission of training teachers for the sake of advancing literacy and public education, the service ethic has since expanded to the arts, athletics, business, health sciences, and technology. Although originally chartered to educate white men and women the school eventually transcended the racial barriers of the era in which it was born, aspiring to be a university for all. Heritage Hall remembers this progressive legacy of service in the hopes of advancing it as a beacon for our ongoing growth and development.
