Dr. Herbert R. Paschal was born on July 8, 1927 in Suffolk V.A. and was subsequently raised in Washington, N.C. He served in the U.S. Navy during 1945-1946 before receiving his B.A. degree from Wake Forest College in 1950, and his M.A. (1953) and Ph.D. (1961) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.1 Paschal’s publications included “A History of Colonial Bath” and “The Tuscarora Indians in Bertie County” in addition to many articles focused on the colonial period and North Carolina History.2
In 1955, Paschal accepted a faculty teaching position at East Carolina, and became a full professor in the History Department in 1963. He also served as a visiting professor at UNC-Chapel Hill that year. During his time at East Carolina, Paschal served as chairman of the History Department and chairman of the East Carolina Committee on the Carolina Charter Tercentary.3 Herbert Paschal died at the age of 54, leaving behind his wife, Dorothy and four children.4
