James Curtis Hendrix, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hoyle Alvin Hendrix, attended Greenville City schools during his youth, before enrolling in East Carolina University for his undergraduate studies, earning a B.S. in English and Social Studies 1958.1 He later earned an M.A. at East Carolina University. In addition to ECU, Hendrix attended Stonier Graduate School of Banking in New Brunswick, New Jersey.2 In 1957, he married Mary Alice Cox with whom he raised a son, J. Curtis Jr., and a daughter, Alison Cox Hendrix.3

During his lifetime, Hendrix served as the Greenville city executive of North Carolina National Bank, the executive vice president and member of the board of directors of the First State Bank, chair of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, president of the East Carolina University Alumni Association Board of Directors, chair of the Pitt County United Fund, director of Coastal Plains Heart Association, and served in the board of directors for the Pitt County unit of the North Carolina Heart Association as well as the board of trustees of the Firemen’s Relief Fund. Curtis also held memberships in the Greenville Kiwanis Club and the administrative board of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church.4

In addition to serving on these roles, Hendrix also served in the United States Army Signal Corps, a military communications branch, from 1954 until 1956, and became the civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for North Carolina in 1973. In 1963, Hendrix received Greenville Jaycees Distinguished Service Award.5 Hendrix passed away in 1977. His funeral services were held at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. He was subsequently buried in Pinewood Memorial Park.6

Hendrix Theatre in Mendenhall was named for James Curtis Hendrix.
