John C. Parker

ECTTS seal

John C. Parker served in the state legislature during the 1907 session representing Jones County and voted in favor of the legislation providing for the founding of ECTTS. Subsequently, he was appointed by the State Board of Education to the ECTTS board of trustees as a charter member, serving from 1907-1915.

Parker was born in Wayne County but later moved to Trenton, in Jones County. He received his education in common schools of the time. Throughout his life, he was a loyal member of the Democratic Party. Reportedly due to the support of U. S. Senator Furnifold M. Simmons (1854-1940), a Jones County native, Parker was appointed, in 1909, by the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture, to a position as district agent for farm inspection work. Parker was, by occupation, himself a farmer.

In addition to his support for educational laws, he was known for his active role in securing legislation providing increased appropriations for Confederate veterans. Like Thomas Jarvis, another charter member of the ECTTS board of trustees, Parker had served in the Confederate Army’s cavalry, 8th Battalion Partisan Rangers, during the Civil War.
