Waightstill “Booger” Morehead Scales Jr.

Waightstill “Booger” Scales, Jr. was born on June 6, 1924 in Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina to Waighstill, Sr. and the former Florence Blow. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled at the Fishburne Military Academy. In 1942, Scales enlisted U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater during World War II. After completing his military service, he was employed by the John Flanagan Buggy Company in Greenville.

A career change in 1948 found Scales in the employment of the Security Life and Trust Company. A natural salesman, Scales led his company in sales for eleven consecutive years and was honored as a member of the insurance industry’s Million Dollar Round Table for fourteen years. In 1962, he was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of Security Life and Trust.

A leader in the community, Scales famously led the “Untouchables” group as chairman of the James S. Ficklen Stadium Fund Drive and the East Carolina Century Club building. In 1957, he was recognized for his service by the Greenville Jaycees with their Distinguished Service Award, followed by his selection as the 1958 Community Man of the Year from the statewide Jaycees. In 1961, Scales was honored with the Golden Deeds Award from the Exchange Club of Greenville.

On Sunday, January 7, 1968, East Carolina honored his years of dedicated service by dedicating the W.M. Scales Jr. Field House. Dr. Leo Jenkins and David J. Whichard spoke at the dedication, evidence of his impact on campus and in the community. He was married to the former Virginia Gaylord in 1949. Together they raised three children: Margaret, Ginger, and Waighty.
