Abstract "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" celebrates the life and voice of African-American contralto Marian Anderson as it chronicles the latter half of her career. Through a series of dramatic vignettes, the complexities of this important 20th-century artist are revealed. Anderson managed the nearly impossible feat of carving out a legendary career as a classical concert singer. She courageously fought institutional racism and her own insecurities and fears to be recognized on her own terms within classical musical circles. She bravely defied a segregationist ban against her 1939 Easter concert recital in Washington, D.C., when she sang before 75,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial (millions more listened on the radio). Having publicly stated several times, "I'm an artist, not an activist," she continued to be a fearless, if somewhat unwitting at times, trailblazer throughout the 1940s and 1950s in the titanic fight for desegregation. The play culminates with Marian Anderson coming to terms with herself and her place in history and proving herself a world-class artist.
