Abstract On June 2, 1988, an extraordinary array of outstanding pianists gathered in Carnegie Hall to celebrate the 135th anniversary of the first Steinway, and the 500,000th piano manufactured by that company. Drawing on an enormous range of virtuoso piano music, the 27 pianists demonstrated the versatility and power of the instrument which has held the greatest fascination for composers, performers, and audiences alike. Hosted by Van Cliburn, this unique program reaches its climax with a dazzling performance of Schumann's "Carnaval," in which the 21 movements are divided between 19 pianists.
