Abstract "REVUE is a nostalgic reprise of that shimmering tapestry of radiant showgirls, humors and spectacle which at one time dominated Broadway. It was The Great Broadway Period of the Twenties and Thirties. When a new Ziegfeld Follies opened the bells chimed--Tin Pan Alley bristled and everybody danced. It was the extravagant era of the Scandals, the Greenwich Village Follies, the Music Box Revues, the Vanities and the Winter Garden runway, plus many, many more ... REVUE not only illuminates the stars and kaleidoscopic drama of these legendary productions but also brings into sharp focus for the first time the craftsmen whose artistic talents all contributed to The Great Broadway Period. Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. sparked the period with his superb taste and elegance. Broadway exploded with unforgettable songs. Irving Berlin's keyboard worked overtime and all the smash hits crossed the Atlantic in a flash. In London, C. B. Cochran, André Charlot, Noël Coward set the pace. In Paris, the Folies-Bergère unfurled its gay plumage, and the Lido ushered in new excitement to the Champs-Elysées. All of this vivid reprise is chronicled in crisp documentary style. Revue is lavishly mounted with the photographs of Alfred Cheney Johnston. The author has included an indispensable appendix of the casts and credits of over 180 productions from 1903 to 1945 and an index for easy reference."--Dust jacket.
General noteIncludes index.
Biographical note"Robert Baral, the author of REVUE, is a Variety alumnus, who has written extensively about the revue form of theatre and musicology. He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana--but is now a confirmed Manhattanite, who many claim really make New York New York. He has also worked with many of the major film companies on that promotional and exploitation hoopla which made Hollywood Hollywood. His research on REVUE took a full ten years time--here and abroad. He is also the author of 'Turn West on 23rd', a lively book about what made the Naughty Nineties really naughty."--Dust jacket.
