| Abstract | This volume documents the exhibition mounted by the Paul Sacher Foundation and the Tinguely Museum in Basel. It contains brief discussions of all the items on display and more than two hundred color illustrations, shedding light on Varese's life and works and documenting his ties to the sister arts. It also contains statements from leading contemporary artists and composers as well as thirty-two essays by musicologists, art historians, and eye witnesses. The essays illuminate the way-stations in Varese's life through an examination of its musical and historical contexts, and convey fresh insights into his music, ideas, and influence on the basis of documents from his estate. The result is a multifaceted picture of a figure whose life's work has fascinated and inspired myriad musicians, from John Cage to Pierre Boulez and Frank Zappa. |
