Abstract The first edition of this book was published in early 1994. It was immediately hailed as a landmark and defining work, bringing new insights about gender, sexuality, and the body to the study of music, and introducing music and musicological inquiry to the exploding field of lesbian and gay studies, and queer theory. Newly revised and expanded, the second edition includes for the first time in its entirety the comprehensive and controversial essay, "Lesbian and Gay Music," written for Grove Dictionary by Philip Brett and Elizabeth Wood. This edition includes fourteen essays that are strikingly diverse in method and subject matter.
