Summary The Little Valley Formation in Tazewell County, Virginia, is an Upper Mississippian (Meramecian) mixed carbonate-siliciclastic unit that records the beginning of a major marine incursion into the Appalachian Basin. Deposition occurred in a shallow-marine environment on the shoreward edge of a carbonate ramp that transgressed the subsiding Price-Maccrady delta complex. Sedimentary microfacies were identified by staining and point-counting thin-sections, insoluble residue analysis, and field observations from five outcrop locations. A depositional model was developed by assigning microfacies to depositional environments and analyzing their stratigraphic relationships. Depositional environments included: reworked deltaic, tidal flat, lagoonal, and shoaling. Diagenetic environments included; near-surface marine phreatic, near-surface meteoric/mixed phreatic, and deep burial. The thickness and lateral continuity of bedding varies greatly in the area, reflecting differences in subsidence rates and sediment supply across the basin. The stratigraphic relationships observed indicate one or more minor regressive events occurred within a major transgressive sequence. The primary transgressive-regressive cycle coincides with eustatic sea-level fluctuations documented by other workers.
