| Abstract | "Although the sequence has been known for almost a century as one of the most important musical forms of the early middle ages, no modern comprehensive study has been devoted to it, and the melodies themselves are not even available in modern critical editions. Professor Crocker's study is the first systematic exploration of the early repertory of sequence melodies, those from the Carolingian era. The use of Western sequence melodies by Notker 'Balbulus' of St. Gall (ca. 840-912) allows a reconstruction of the core of the early West-Frankish repertory. Through an intricate comparison of Notker's work with the early West-Frankish sequences preserved in tenth- to eleventh-century Aquitanian manuscripts, Professor Crocker attempts to restore the preserved versions of the earliest sequences to their original ninth-century state. The study includes collated transcriptions (from principal manuscripts) of the sequences of Notker's Liber hymnorum together with the early West-Frankish sequences that use the same melodies."--Dust jacket. |
