Abstract Maria Callas has been called the supreme operatic interpreter and personality of her time. This book is a complete study of the Callas musical legacy and is an essential guide to the fascinating and overwhelming variety of her talent. Callas' career coincided with the introduction of new techniques for recording operas--particularly the development of the long-playing record--and Callas herself was in large part responsible for the great increase in recorded operas. Her first commercial discs were made in 1949, and from then until 1974 thirty-three of her forty-seven roles were taken down complete. Many of these roles were recorded in performances spanning a number of years, and here, in this study of all the commercial recordings, many private and pirated recordings, as well as broadcast performances, the reader is given a fascinating examination of Callas' growth as an artist. He offers penetrating analyses of her interpretations of various roles, along with many anecdotes and behind-the-scenes glimpses of recording sessions and performances.
