880 3 6| 520-00/(Sa| Matrix models, based upon individual survivorship and fecundity, are used to estimate population growth rates (λ), determine the relative influence of changes in transition rates on population growth through elasticity analysis, and conduct population viability analysis (PVA). For rare species, PVA can project future population size and probability of extinction based on current population size and past survival and reproductive rates. Cirsium pitcheri (Torr. ex Eat.) Torr. & Gray (Asteraceae) is a rare, federally protected, dune perennial, native to the Great Lakes area of the United States, and currently the subject of long-term research on population demography, genetic diversity, and the success of restoration efforts. Cirsium pitcheri is considered a pioneer species, well-adapted to open, early successional and disturbance-prone habitats but less able to compete in later successional, high cover, low light environments. This study (1) described the demography, growth, elasticities, and viability of the natural Sturgeon Bay, Wilderness State Park, Emmet County, Michigan population through the use of stage- and size-based matrix models, (2) quantified the effect of light availability and litter on the emergence and vigor of seedlings in a controlled environment, (3) and determined population viability under various scenarios of light availability and litter presence. Calculations of λ showed a population in decline (λ<1) for all but one year pair. Computer simulations projected a population with a >5% probability of extinction in the next 100 yr. thus by definition, non-viable. No simulated population persisted for more than a half-century (P₁ = 100%, 47-51 yr). Elasticity analyses suggest increases in seedling recruitment would benefit population growth. Seedling emergence in experimental treatments increased by 16-34% with the absence of litter and/or shade. Values of λ increased when recalculated using experimentally determined seedling emergence under varying scenarios of shade and litter absence; however, increases were not sufficient to produce P₁ values low enough to indicate a viable population. Results suggest ,management of current and future populations of Cirsium pitcheri should focus on the preservation of open sand habitats and the natural processes that create them, as well as, improving survival at the earliest life stages.;
