Abstract Tchaikovsky regarded the symphony as the most lyrical of all musical forms, where he could express longings and ideas which were too vague for words and needed the eloquence of music. In this guide the author surveys Tchaikovsky's symphonic style, examining in detail his six symphonies and four concertos (as well as his pieces for violin or cello and orchestra and the Concert Fantasia); and he shows how his conception of music was the lyrical idea, i.e. melody, 'complete even to its harmonic and orchestral clothing'. In this revised edition the opportunity has been taken to add a completely new section on Manfred, and to revise the translations of quotations.
