Abstract This book provides singers, singing teachers, educators, and those who care for singers with concise and authoritative knowledge and insights from some of the world's leading professional singers, physicians, current day performers, choral conductors and voice scientists who are involved daily in the management of individuals who use their voices in professional entertainment settings. Divided into three major sections, the first part presents an overview of the world of the singer--describing who they are and their various artistic styles. A second part is directed at how to assess common problems of singers and actors. The concluding section looks at treatment options such as modification of singing style, voice therapy, over-the-counter remedies and prescription drugs. Also considered here are problems that require medical care, voice training or adaptation to the performance world, including a short review of the role of surgery. The book concludes with an appendix of general methods of preserving the voice as well as a comprehensive glossary of medical and singing terminology.
