| Abstract | This is a detailed account of the creation and production of the opera Aida as revealed in the letters and documents of the composer Giuseppe Verdi and his associates. Aida was given its world premiere at Cairo in 1871, and the correspondence concerning the opera extends from 1868 to 1891. These 743 letters and 14 documents record a drama set against a background of war, politics, and backstage intrigue, revolving around Verdi with five other major personalities as principal actors: August Mariette Bey, the famous French Egyptologist whose plot inspired Verdi's opera; Camille Du Locle, one-time director of the Opera-Comique in Paris; the Italian librettist Antonio Ghislanzoni; Paul Draneht Bey, the general manager of the Khedive's Opera House in Cairo, and Giulio Ricordi, Verdi's publisher, producer, and personal representative. Explanatory information is appended to the letters and documents, and there are biographical notes about the correspondents. A brief chronology of Verdi's life and work, and a selected bibliography, are included. The majority of the letters and all of the documents are published here for the first time in English, and much of the material has never been published before in any language. The volume as a whole presents a revealing and dramatic story in musical history. |
| General note | "In the translations of the letters and documents I have been assisted by Dr. Lawrence Baldassaro, who has contributed to the translation of approximately 400 letters by Giuseppe Verdi. Thomas Holliday and Dr. Michael Pisoni helped me with editing, research, and most other translations"--author's note. |
