Interest in his work has grown out of all knowledge during the past decade, and his operas have been performed at Glyndebourne and at major European and American houses. Yet it remains true that no book on Cavalli is available in English, and none has made use of the very considerable researches of recent years. The author has herself been responsible for the major part of these researches. She has examined much new documentary material in the Biblioteca Marciana and other Venetian archives, and the conclusions she researches here will vitally affect future performances of Cavalli's music. Furthermore, the author has a more profound familiarity with Cavalli's work than any other scholar, not only as a result of her researches but through editing several of the operas and performing them. In this way she has acquired an awareness, impossible to gain through a study of the scores alone, of the effect of the music in performance, especially in the theater. In this book, the author deals in turn with Cavalli's biography, with his librettos, with the operas, with the sacred music, and with his reputation and influence. An unusually well written work is illustrated by 60 musical examples.;
