Contents Theatre music -- Church music -- Orchestral music -- Chamber, occasional, and didactic music -- The man -- Biographical summary.
Abstract Biographical and critical attention has reflected the varying fortunes of Cherubini's music over more than a century. A full-length study in English now overdue, this book is intended as a general introduction to the composer's music. Since Cherubini wrote more than 430 compositions in the course of a long life, the author has considered both the desirability of offering an overall view of Cherubini's musical personality in an historical perspective and the intrinsic importance of individual compositions. Where scores are readily available, as, for instance, in the case of the major church works and overtures, the author presents more detailed analysis.
