Summary Otitis media, an infection of the middle ear, is the leading cause of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss in the United States. Children, especially those 10 years of age and younger, have the highest incidence of otitis media. The etiology of otitis media remains incompletely defined. The Mongolian gerbil. Mariones unguiculatus, is one laboratory animal with no reported history of otitis media and, as such, provides an excellent choice as an animal model for otitis media research. This study was undertaken to determine the specific normal microflora of the nasopharynx of the gerbil. This information is required for the evaluation of the gerbil as a model for otitis media. In this study, the nasopharyngea microflora was determined for 6 gerbils. Each gerbil (6/6) had at least one species of Staphylococcus and 4/6 gerbils had at least one species of Corynebacterium. Most other facultatively anaerobic bacteria Isolated, appear to be transitory. No anaerobic bacterium could be identified as being a consistent member of the naso- pharyngeal microflora of the Mongolian gerbil.
