Abstract Today's accelerating efforts to reform arts education in the schools have created an increasingly complex environment in which to develop new policy as public arts agencies, private foundations, universities, arts service organizations, and professional arts education associations all assume leadership roles in the reform movement. But what role can research play in this reform agenda? What does research say about the current state of arts education? Can research improve practice and policy development in arts education? What research do we have, what research do we need? Are support systems in place for development of a cooperative, long-term research agenda for arts education? These critical issues are explored in penetrating essays about the unprecedented amount of research currently under way by leading arts education scholars Margaret DiBlasio of the University of Minnesota, Jerrold Ross of New York University, Brent Wilson of Penn State University and Theodore Zernich of the University of Illinois. Finally, Samuel Hope of the National Office for Arts Accreditation in Higher Education provocatively and persuasively argues that policy research studies are desperately needed to raise the quality of debate in the field and to keep the idea of arts education alive. This book measures the pulse of the reform movement's cutting edge. It is indispensable reading for anyone who cares about the future of arts education.
