Abstract Education beyond the classroom? A must, say editors Balfe and Heine. Education, including arts education, should be a lifelong experience. Our society's educational focus on youth overlook its largest segment--adults. They comprise today's arts audiences, represent potential unrealized arts audiences, and are transmitters of values to tomorrow's generations. However, more than 60 percent of adults do not participate in the arts, and many who do so are only marginally involved. If this gap is ignored, we face the prospect of a serious erosion in this quantity and quality of arts participation in society. The "baby boomers," older citizens, and special audiences all must be reached if they are to pass on a commitment to the arts to upcoming generations. The time for arts educators to join the "lifelong learning" movement is now. This book explores and defines a new field: arts education for adults outside of formal academic settings. It offers a broad range of insights from arts educators who work in a variety of corporate, community and arts institutional settings, representing organizations such as: the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art; WNET/Channel 13; the National Endowment for the Arts' Officer of Special Constituencies; The New Criterion; Affiliate Artists; and PepsiCo Inc.
