| Abstract | This is not a book about Mr. Britten or his music, although there are some memorable glimpses of the man and artist as seen by his friends and collaborators. It reflects, rather, the variety of his own and his friends' interests, which range from the Suffolk countryside and Indian music to Mozart's Così and the Greek Shadow theatre. A notable contribution is made by E. M. Forster, who offers a chapter from an unfinished novel, Arctic Summer. The contributors have written about a subject close to his own heart which at the same time will appeal to Mr. Britten himself. The illustrations are contributions in their own right, made by the many friends Mr Britten has among artists: Reynolds Stone, John Piper, John Nash, Mary Potter, Henry Moore, Georg Ehrlich and Kenneth Green. Reproductions of autograph MSS. by Michael Tippett and Hans Werner Henze are also among the tributes. |
