Summary Old channelized (50 years), newly channelized (nine years) and unchannelized segments of the Clayroot Swamp and Creeping Swamp watershed (Pitt Co., N. C.) were sampled monthly for benthic macroinvertebrates from April to September, 1974. Water quality was generally superior in the channelized streams in that dissolved oxygen, alkalinity and pH were higher. Population densities of benthic macroinvertebrates were greatest in the newly channelized stream during low flow periods and lowest in the natural system during the same period. The high densities of the channelized streams were due to the abundance of midge (Chironomidae) larvae and oligochaetes. These populations were severely reduced by high discharge periods. Under low flow conditions at least, there appeared to be an abundance of fish food organisms (chironomids) available in the nine year old channelization project. Diversity was lowest in the newly channelized stream though macrophyte beds in these areas harbored a very diverse and abundant fauna. Benthic diversity of the 50 year old project was equivalent to that of the natural stream-swamp but faunal and water quality differences indicated that it (the 50 year old project) had not recovered toward the natural state, A northern range extension of approximately 400 miles is reported for the epigean isopod Asellus obtusus Williams.
