| Abstract | This is the introduction to a new Routledge series: books about pop music designed specifically for use in schools, written by experts and edited by practicing teachers. The series includes, among other subjects, illustrated studies of folksong and music hall, jazz and blues, Tin Pan Alley, rock 'n' roll, meeting a need that has been felt for some time by both teachers and pupils. The approach is multi-disciplinary. Popular music, it is argued, is not only a musical but also a social phenomenon; the criteria needed to assess it are different from those used in the appreciation of 'classical' music. The first section of this teacher's guide is devoted to setting out just what those criteria should be. A second section puts forward bases for course construction that are at once detailed enough to give the teacher practical advice in course preparation, yet also flexible enough to permit modification to suit individual teaching methods. Ideas range from the specific and technical (melody, harmony, counterpoint and rhythm) to the general (black studies, youth culture, the meanings and motives of pop lyrics). A final section provides a list of further resources that may be used to supplement each book in the series. |
