General note"In consequence of a public invitation a Meeting of Women was held at the Lecture Room of the Museum, June 25th, 1849, to organize a Society to provide a Cheap Bording House, or temporary home for women out of employment ... and where also, friendless and destitute children, of ages and circumstances to be placed in families could be taken care of, until homes by adoption or otherwise might present, in which they could be reared and educated in Christian families, hoping that with the Divine blessing they might become useful and respectable citizens."--P.
