Contents Humpback breeding grounds -- Other ocean preditors -- Migration and feeding behaviors -- Flukes & flippers : home again.
Abstract "Competition and cooperation in biological behavior are highilighted ... We first see a humpback cow with a protective male escort, nurturing her calf off the coast of Hawaii, while the largest bulls compete to mate with other fertile females. Soon, the entire pod migrates thousands of miles to Alaska for herring, krill and plankton to eat, revealing surprising feeding cooperation. Along the way, they communicate through their eerie, melodious songs and sounds from breaches and water slaps with flippers and flukes. Their story comes full circle as the pod migrates back to warmer breeding waters, and the mother abandons her no-autonomous calf. Her biological signals have attracted males eager to fight each other and to mate with her again"--Container.
