| Scope and content |
This collection of 17 documents about the Nuu-Chah-Nulth covers a period from about 1780 to 1990. The works in collection are roughly divided between the northern, central, and southern Nuu-Chah-Nulth tribes of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, and the Makah, a subgroup living on the Olympic Peninsula at Neah Bay, Washington State in the United States. Major studies in this collection include: Drucker, Colson, Swan, Koppert, Sapir and Swadesh, Arima and Dewhirst, and Reniker and Gunther. Other ethnographic topics discussed in this collection are: the girl's puberty ceremony and potlatch; Makah games; an analysis of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth wolf ritual; changing marriage patterns over a one hundred year period (1860-1960), and an account of a modern (ca.1970s) Nuku-Chah-Nulth community (Vancouver Island) in historical perspective. |
