Summary The Lemon Springs alkali feldspar metagranite is a small (less than 15 km2), early Paleozoic (?), epizonal stock which intrudes Carolina Slate belt metarhyolites approximately 8 kilometers south of Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. The metagranite and associated rocks are well exposed in the Martin Marietta quarry located 2 kilometers north of Lemon Springs and approximately 2 kilometers east of the Triassic-age Sanford Basin. Field studies indicate that the pluton has had a complex structural history. The granite contains a middle greenschist-facies mineral assemblage characterized by nearly pure end-member composition alkali feldspars, biotite, chlorite, stilpnomelane, phengite, and manganese-rich epidote and garnet. Relative to other Piedmont granites it is characterized by higher concentrations of SO₂, Na20, Ba, and Y, and lower concentrations of CaO, Rb, and Sr. The granite is cut by a bimodal suite of NNW striking alkaline metabasalt and sodic metarhyolite dikes. An older set of low silica, potassic (6 to 9 wt.% K₂O), metabasic dikes may represent metamorphosed lamprophyres. All metamorphosed dikes contain middle greenschist-facies mineral assemblages. These dikes and the granite are intruded by NNW striking Mesozoic tholeiitic dikes characterized by low (45.5 to 49.5 wt.%) SO₂ concentrations. The pluton is partially covered by a thin blanket of lower Cretaceous Coastal Plain sediments.
