Abstract Near the end of the Civil War, Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, commander of the Union's Second Corps, assured his men that their battlefield sacrifices would not be forgotten. But much of the Second Corps' history and accomplishments have suffered neglect, until now. Defeating Lee takes an analytical approach to the history of the Corps. It follows the unit from its creation and rise to prominence, through the battles that earned it a reputation for hard fighting, and finally to the efforts of its veterans to maintain its legacy.
