Summary Rangia cuneata, an estuarine clam, occurs in scattered patches along the northwestern shore in Croatan Sound. Population density ranged up to 12 clams per square meter. Overall distribution of Rangia was correlated with bottom, sediment type, being found primarily on fine and medium-fine sand substrates. Local distribution is related to mean grain size, organic content of the sediment, and water depth. Shallow, mesohaline water with a medium-fine sand substrate, low in organics, best describes the habitat of Rangia cuneata in Croatan Sound. Six separate size frequencies (year classes) were found during the survey. The fourth and fifth year clams were most abundant. According to this study, the five year Rangia should be the most economically profitable clams, since their meat weight was double that of the four year clams. Rangia's thick shell accounted for 75% of its total weight, thus making it an Important carbonate source, both commercially and ecologically.
