Abstract This is an extraordinary journey through the life of La Divina, an account of Maria Callas' early years. The heart of the book is her unpublished diary which is full of a young woman's dreams. It is complemented by reminiscences of friends who knew her well, and wrote sympathetically about her struggles and triumphs and her absolute dedication to her art. They provide the reader with glimpses of the woman behind the diva, whose essential humanity could find full expression in her artistry and move generations.
General noteOriginally published in Italian as Giovane Callas; translation by Bruno Tosi in collaboration with William Weaver, Francis Keeping, Richard Barker, and Anita Pensotti.
