Abstract The author of this study proposed to investigate the solo songs of Ivor Gurney in an attempt to discover the elements of Gurney's song idiom. The approach to the study was from the standpoint of the vocal pedagogue and was undertaken to provide a source of useful information for the student and teacher of vocal literature concerning Ivor Gurney and his songs. The special problems studied were: (1) tracing the environmental background of the songs through a biographical study of Ivor Gurney, (2) determining Gurney's stylistic preferences by an analysis of selected musical and poetic aspects of the two hundred and ninenty-six manuscript songs, (3) determining the less objective elements of Gurney's style by a subjective description of all eighty-two published songs, and (4) determining whether or not, on the basis of the data from the stylistic analyses, it is possible to circumscribe Gurney's song idiom.
