| General note | Published anonymously and over the years variously attributed to John Hawkesworth, James Cook, the Duc de Brancas, and others. Attributed to James Magra (later Matra), an American born midshipman, by G. Arnold Wood in The discovery of Australia (London, 1922), p. 385. This attribution is supported by Alan Frost in his article "James Mario Matra: voyager with Cook" (Common-Place, vol. 5, no. 2, Jan. 2005) in which he states, "Historians have long suspected Magra as being the author of the first extended account of the Endeavour's voyage, published anonymously at the end of September 1771 in contravention of the Admiralty's ban. With more information now available about the New Yorker, it is safe to conclude that this was so." |
| General note | Includes the letter addressed to the Lords of the Admiralty from Thomas Becket, the publisher of the original London edition. In later printings, the Lords Banks and Solander having denied their approval of the journal, this letter was suppressed. |
