General noteThe doctrinal controversy commenced in 1808 with the publication of Ballou's A doctrinal controversy between the Hopkintonian and the Universalist (Shaw & Shoemaker 14406), and was continued in 1809 with Robinson's A candid reply to a late publication entitled A doctrinal controversy between the Hopkintonian and Universalist (Shaw & Shoemaker 18525). The present title was advertised as "just published" in the Nov. 27, 1810, issue of the New Hampshire gazette, Portsmouth.
