General noteWritten in imitation of Ann Taylor's "My mother."
General noteFirst line: Who in my childhood's earliest day. This is neither the text found in Original poems for infant minds ... Philadelphia, 1809, attributed to Ann and Jane Taylor (cf. Welch 445.5), the first line of which reads, "Who took me from my mother's arms," nor is it the Mary Elliott poem of the same name which begins, "Thy task of duty now is o'er." Erroneously attributed to Elliott by Welch. Cf. Marjorie Moon, The children's books of Mary (Belson) Elliott, entry U216.
General notePlates probably engraved by William Charles. Cf. Weiss, Harry B. William Charles, early caricaturist, engraver and publisher of children's books, New York, 1932, p. 9.
General note"Of Wm Charles may also be had the following little poems (in the same stile [sic] as this) Our Saviour. My mother. My son. My daughter. My sister. Gratitude. And a variety of others."--advertisement, back cover.
