Summary Preliminary sampling of benthic organisms in Croatan Sound was conducted from July 1 to August 31, 1970. Stations were arranged according to a grid pattern, with meter frame and core samples taken at each station for faunal analysis. Additional factors observed throughout the study included a visual sediment description at each station, as well as data on temperature, salinity, and pH. Benthic fauna in Croatan Sound was com-posed primarily of infaunal macroinvertebrates, with epifauna restricted to oyster bed areas. Seventeen species were collected during the study. Analysis of faunal data showed the Sound to be composed of a large Quartz Sand Community covering most of the bottom and usually accompanied by rnesohaline water conditions. Dominant organisms were Capitella capitella. Nereis succinea and Macoma balthica. M. balthica was replaced by Rangia cuňala in more oligohaline portions of the Sound, and Crassostrea virginica replaced M. balthica in oyster bed areas. The possibility of a Peat Community is also suggested.
