Summary Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease, caused by bacteria, affecting the gingiva (gums). It results in the destruction of the alveolar bone supporting some, or all of the teeth. If not treated, the disease leads to the loss of the teeth in the involved areas. Periodontitis is characterized by stages of remission and exacerbation. It is a chronic disease with acute phases. Interaction of bacteria with the host immune response system is necessary for the destruction of alveolar bone seen in periodontitis. Impairment of some of the cells of the host response aids the disease. However, limiting certain aspects of the inflammatory response may decrease hard and soft tissue destruction and speed the remission of the acute phase of chronic periodontitis. Low dose prostaglandins elicit all the signs of the inflammatory response. Many non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprophen, have as their mechanism of action the inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase, or some other mechanism of prostaglandin inhibition. This study recorded the rate and extent of remission of the symptoms of Inflammation during the acute exacerbations of chronic periodontitis, when ibuprophen was used as part of an accepted treatment regimen. The results clearly indicated that the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprophen was a good alternative to narcotic pain medication as part of a complete treatment regimen of the acute exacerbations of chronic periodontitis. Ibuprofen appeared to hasten the remission of acute symptoms while giving adequate pain relief to the patient during the acute exacerbations of chronic moderate to severe periodontitis.
