| Abstract | This book presents a simple and practical approach to voice therapy and voice improvement through the correct usage of the muscles of the vocal instrument. A series of lessons show the student, teacher and therapist both how to keep the muscles of the vocal instrument in good physical condition and how to use them correctly when speaking and singing. The muscles of the cheeks, nose, lips, lower jaw, tongue, soft palate and waist are the principal concern of this approach. The emphasis is on the muscles as causes which produce sound, and not on the sounds themselves, which are the effect. When the muscles are used correctly, the sounds will be correct. Through the continued correct usage of the muscles when speaking and singing, the voice becomes of the best quality that each individual's own particular vocal instrument is capable of producing. The exercises found in this book are basic to the correct production of sound or voice, and they can be used as follows: in the treatment of voice disorders in cooperation with the laryngologist; in improving the speaking voice for use in daily conversation, in one's business or profession and for acting in the theatre; in improving the singing voice for singing popular songs, show tunes, musical comedy, light opera and opera; in helping to overcome speech difficulties such as poor articulation, lisping and stuttering, and any type of speech difficulty where the muscles used in speaking are capable of being exercised and used; in helping to overcome a foreign or local accent; in improving the voice quality of the deaf and hard of hearing child and adult; in correcting misusage of the oral and facial muscles in cooperation with the orthodontist and oral surgeon; in correctly strengthening the facial muscles in cooperation with the plastic surgeon; in helping children to avoid voice disorders and speech difficulties in later life. |
