Understanding music. UNAUTHORIZED
Abstract Using extracts from the opera "Dido and Aeneas", this program introduces the main musical language devised by composers in the genre of opera. The musical language of recitative and aria, often seen as opposite poles, is introduced. The program also illustrates the compounded problem of what happens when more than one person is singing at a given time, and highlights the composer's use of the elements of music in striving to promote the meaning of the words, even if it is difficult to make them all out.
