Summary This report examines energy use in residential appliances. Current appliance energy use is evaluated and technologically feasible improvements are studied. A typical set of household appliances is developed, and modified by three classes of efficiency improvements. Significant energy saving potential is found in all major appliance energy uses, with the largest savings in water heaters and refrigerators. Costs of the improvements are relatively low, providing short payback times. The effects of the improvements on building thermal loads and electricity demand profiles are also examined.
